Take a trip to Oklahoma and you’ll see what America’s heartland is all about, namely a great state with a unique mix of cultures. It gets its name from the Native American Choctaw tribe and is heavily influenced by the Native American culture and others who call Oklahoma their home. In the city of Tulsa, you’ll find the world-famous Gilcrease Museum. The Gilcrease has the broadest collection of Native American artifacts, art, documents, and maps and is a must see for anyone visiting or passing through. Another hotspot is the Oklahoma City Zoo, located in the state’s capital with easy access from major thoroughfares. Contrary to many’s belief that Oklahoma is flat it actually contains several mountain ranges, such as the Arbuckles, Kiamichis, Ouachitas, Wichitas, and a portion of the Ozarks. It also has over 200 man-made lakes that add up to over one million acres of water! So, don’t forget your swimsuit and tanning oil. Due to its geographic location, it also has diverse weather patterns with more rainfall in the east, which keeps it green, and much less in the state’s panhandle, where it’s much more arid. Being a huge farming and manufacturing state where goods are moved in and out daily, the main highways have many lanes, making it easy to travel throughout the state. And be sure to sample the comfort food. With fried chicken, catfish, ribs, cornbread, okra, and sweet potatoes the cuisine is predominately Southern, despite its strong Native American influence. So plan a trip, pack up, and come visit the great state of Oklahoma!
